Alabama Continuing Education Requirements

Hours Required
  • 15 hours annually (1 PDH unit = 1 CPC unit = 1 CPD unit)
  • 30 hours if biennially

Board Approved Courses or Providers The Alabama board does not pre-approve course providers or specific courses. Each engineering licensee must determine whether a course satisfies the state board’s CPC requirements.
Approved Subject Matter
  • Technical, ethical, or managerial content relevant to the licensee’s area of engineering practice.
  • For correspondence, video, audio, or online courses, the course must require evidence of achievement and completion.
Are Online Courses Allowed Online and web-based courses are specifically listed as an approved activity, with no limit on hours earned through online continuing education.
PDH Carryover 15 PDH maximum may be carried forward into the next renewal period.
Other Specific Requirements
  1. Unaccepted CPC Activity — Demonstration of equipment is not acceptable for PDH credit.
  2. A licensed professional engineer or licensed professional land surveyor must earn a minimum of 15 PDH per annual renewal period, or 30 PDH if biennial, except for permitted carryover. Carryover may not exceed 15 PDH.
  3. Recordkeeping for Audit Purposes — Records must be maintained for a minimum of 4 years.
  4. Random CPC Audits — The Board conducts random audits. Failure to respond within 60 days may result in temporary suspension until audit requirements are met. Falsification of documentation is grounds for disciplinary action.
